Government Agencies vs Private Security in South Africa

Updated: 7 days ago

With the private security industry having far greater numbers in terms of personnel than that of the South African National Defence Force and South African Police Services [combined]. The private sector is larger in number. But where it is gains in number, it lacks in skill, professionalism and ability. We set to change that.

The 450 000 active private security guards compared to 207 000 of that of the South African government security forces means that there are more than two times the number of private security guards to one soldier or policeman. However, the standard training of the private security guard cannot be compared to that of the police or the military in the country. Where one's duty is to protect an establishment, people or assets. The other is to [mission of the South African Police Service] prevent and combat anything that may threaten the safety and security of any community, investigate any crimes that threaten the safety and security of any community, ensure offenders are brought to justice, and participate in efforts to address the causes of crime. Where the primary mission of the SANDF is to defend South Africa against external military aggression. The other functions are secondary.

Government agencies perform a very different role the that of the private security industry. although they have come under scrutiny in recent years, it still remains far superior in everything but numbers to the private security industry in South Africa.

With better training, discipline and commitment from both company and guard the private security industry can become a formidable force in the future.
